Summer Program

Fun, Games & Swimming

For the past three summers the Amigos have organized programs of games and activities for the children while school is out. The children are insatiably curious, and hungry for company and affection from adults.

In return, the volunteers have gained wonderful lifetime memories as a result of interacting with these children.

The Amigos provide love, encouragement and work with the children on projects from which they both derive much joy and enrichment.

Volunteers sometimes become English teachers, while others show the children how to build things, arrange flowers or make jewelry and other crafts.

Jim & Betty Parker organized and instructed the older boys on how to make stools, which will later be used in the new Learning Center.

Each boy enjoyed designing and painting his own stool; and under strict supervision, attached the base and top, using a staple gun for the first time.

The Parkers supplied all the tools and equipment necessary for the project.

Later Jim was observed with his power drill, tightening all the loose table legs on the property.

Our volunteers are priceless.

Lauri Jenson, Owner of Galeria Dos Lunas on Colon in Ajijic, visited several times with her beautiful stones and beads, with which the older girls had a wonderful time creating their own necklaces and bracelets.

This was a huge hit with the girls … and even a few of the Madres and boys joined in making bracelets as gifts.

We also discovered some extremely talented artists in our group of niñas.

Jane Hainsworth developed her own flash cards and other teaching aids, which made learning English fun for the children.

A few observers overheard the children happily singing the Beatles' tune, "Hello, Goodbye" in English.

Maxi Lane, Debra Barsanti and Stacy Girton helped the girls make glittering, feathered masks just for fun.

Maxi, (15) who is multi-lingual, was a particular treat for the older girls. She visited them a few days a week with her mother, Bettina Rigby during Maxi's 3-week break from school in Germany.

Carol Farrell brought colorful props which captured the little ones' attention as they had fun learning to recognize different shapes and colors in English and Spanish.

Others play games, read books and put together puzzles with children of various ages, all eager to learn and play with an adult.

Bettina Rigby hands out Lego's, games and coloring books during one of the popular daily playtime sessions in the dining hall, as volunteer Pat Kemper helps some of the children with a Jigsaw puzzle.

Swimming at La Cristiania Park in Chapala

One of the most exciting elements of the Summer Program for the children has been the incorporation of taking the children to the public swimming pool in Parque La Cristiania in Chapala two days a week.

Volunteers serve as lifeguards, as well as teach the children the basics of swimming-an important life skill. The children are provided snacks
and drinks after their swim before heading back to the Misión
to tell the others about their experience that day.

A special treat arrived just in time to celebrate the end of the summer in the form of Hershey candy bars delivered by Ron Stard and Ron Kannick of the Rotary Club of Ajijic.
